It is a captivating novel that weaves an intricate tapestry of art, family secrets, and the supernatural. The character of Aroha, a soul without a body, adds a hauntingly beautiful dimension to the narrative.
The author skillfully navigates the complexities of shaky mental health in the afterlife, painting Aroha as both an anomaly and a poignant figure. The tension escalates as Joanna's choices come under scrutiny, making the reader empathize with her struggles.
The novel's strength lies in its ability to blend the mystical with the mundane seamlessly. The author's prose paints vivid imagery, allowing readers to feel the strokes of Joanna's artistic genius and the palpable tension between the characters. The central theme of secrets, especially the one Aroha desperately wants to hide, keeps the reader eagerly turning pages.
It is a thought-provoking exploration of family dynamics, the enigmatic nature of creativity, and the lingering influence of departed loved ones. It leaves readers contemplating the delicate dance between the seen and the unseen, the tangible and the ethereal. A masterfully crafted narrative that leaves an indelible imprint on the reader's imagination.

Aroha (English Edition) Kindle版
Joanna’s fine with her random urges. She’s confident in her ability to paint masterpieces that fetch millions in a world of shrinking coasts, violent storms and all but outlawed paper. She’s clueless about everything else and the discovery that although dead, her mother Aroha is far from gone and is largely disapproving of her choices is just another thing to worry about. Aroha is an anomaly with shaky mental health, a soul without a body who can still touch the world but probably shouldn’t. She has awaited her daughter’s return home for 24 years and is none too happy with the lazy, messy, pot-smoking result. As if things weren’t hard enough, without a mortal body to help manage her phantom physical urges, Joanna’s new boyfriend Tristian, with his loose wandering soul and tight morals, presents an awkwardly arousing distraction. A distraction from the secret Aroha desperately wants hide from Joanna…

a ghostly page turner

I would not have thought I could have been so captivated by a ghost story, but then it is not just a ghost story. What grabbed me the most was the switching of narrator chapter by chapter, often seeing the same moments through the eyes both main characters - this was done really well and I was completely drawn into the story this way. The author really showed insightfulness into peoples different ways of experiencing life in the small moments. It is a book about relationships too, set in future which resonates all too closely that it might serve as a prediction - so well imagined and written. The prosaic opening chapter blew me away and I was hooked!

Now and again, not often, when I'm reading a book, I find myself thinking,"How does the writer do this? How can a person be this clever?".

A great story, in a post-apocalyptic world, with new tech and old (normal) human failings. A really fun read with a hook right at the start.
